I nick named the Wahiee Ridge trail this because 1. I don't know how to pronounce it (Hawaiian words stump me once again) and 2. It was so fun and scary at the same time! My friend and I decided it would be a good idea to hike on our day off rather than stay in bed and watch Friends. We forgot about how hot Maui gets at noon when we decided to go at 11 so we had time to sleep in. It was brutal-I crouched under foot tall grass for shade when i found it. The whole hike was in the sun basically. We watched everyone come down, while we were getting our butts kicked hiking up hill (obviously they were smart and started earlier in the morning). I was red in the face and about to pass out at the top, so I didn't even notice much of the view. After an hour of sitting under a little patch of grass that had enough shade to cover half of my face, I felt better. The way down was UNREAL. How I missed the views on the way up, I don't know, but they were killer. We were in the middle of the green mountains of Maui, with a view of the ocean and the city. The tropical plants surrounded us, and I remembered how great hiking is, to get out of the city and be in nature with peace and quiet. Ker and I had great chats about life, love and reminisced about High School and all the dumb drama. Our lives are a thousand times simpler here. I highly reccomend this hike between the hours of 7-10 AM, and 4-6 PM. Absolutely breathtaking. It is on the ridge outside of Kahului about ten minutes, towards Wailuku.
